List members might be interested in the FIAF (International Federation of
Archives of Film) 2002 conference taking place in Seoul 19-27 April, hosted
by the Korean Film Archive. It's the first FIAF Congress (of 58) to be held
in Asia. The subject: "Asian Films - Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.

There is an accompanying film series, and 3 presentations address Japanese
cinema: "Asian Cinema, its singularity and universality-Mizoguchi's 'Oyuki
the Virgin' in the cinematic intertextuality" (Shigehiko Hasumi, Film
Critic, Former President of the University of Tokyo); "Film Preservation in
Japan: Difficulties and Hopes" (Hisashi Okajima, Curator of Film, National
Film Center, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo); "Researching Silent
Japanese Cinema/Japanese Cinema as an Academic Adventure" (Joanne Bernardi,
U Rochester). There will also be a 25 minute presentation of "Lumi?re in
Asia" (Jean-Louis Cot, Dept. du catalogage et analyse des films Centre
National de la Cinematographie).
