Just a quick note to say that I didn't mean to single out David Desser in my
last email, whose writing I appreciate a lot and is guilty of none of the
crimes I mentioned in writing about Japanese cinema. Generally I meant that
the split on Japanese film writing works both ways, and for every cult
writer, there's just as many people willing to take the high road and close
Japanese cinema off to general audiences.
There again, a big thank you to Mike Arnold for showing me Drifting
Classroom this afternoon and demonstrating exactly why the middle ground is
so often ignored by non-Japanese writers.
