The Committee on Cinema and Media Studies and the Department of East
Asian
Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago invite
applications for two appointments in East Asian cinema studies for
academic year 2003-2004.
One position is in Japanese, and the rank is open (tenured or
tenure-track).
Preference will go to candidates who can integrate cinema with the
literary,
historical, and cultural aspects of the study of Japan. In addition to
undergraduate teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to
supervise graduate students in EALC. Command of the Japanese language is
necessary.
The second appointment will be at the junior level, tenure-track;
candidates
may specialize in China, Japan, Korea, or intraregional comparison.
Preference will go to those who can teach courses in CMS outside their
specialty, such as film history, theory, or aesthetics. Command of the
relevant language/s is equally necessary as in the first position.
The letter of application should be accompanied by a cv, three letters
of recommendation, a publication or writing sample, and sample syllabi,
preferably for one graduate and one undergraduate course. The PhD must
be completed by August of 2003. Review of applications will begin
