Dreamworks producer Walter Parkes announced yesterday that production of a
sequel to the recent Hollywood remake of The Ring has been given the green
light, with star Naomi Watts, director Gore Verbinski and writer Ehren
Kruger all returning. To date the film has grossed over US$100 million,
easily recouping the $60 million production costs. Instead of following
the already existing storylines of the two Japanese sequels and the novels
by Suzuki Koji, they will be going with an original story. Release is
scheduled for 2004.

Fuji TV are remaking Ozu Yasujiro's 1962 film "Sanma no Aji" (An Autumn
Afternoon/The Widower) into a 2 and a half hour drama special. Broadcast
is scheduled for January 3rd next year. The cast includes Utsui Ken and
Zaizen Naomi. Utsui also appeared in the recent TV remake of Ozu's "Tokyo
Story", broadcast on July 6th this year and also a Fuji TV production.
That rated a healthy 20.3%, so Fuji are obviously hoping for similar
success with this one.
