Not much to go on, but I assume you're thinking of Kagemusha. This is the 
film where a lowly man is forced into playing the role of the lord 
because he looks like him (the shadow warrior who is supposed to trick 
would-be assassins). After the lord dies, he begins to think he is the 
lord, to tragic results.
