bunraku in film

Yup, I think the play is "Nozakimura"--that's what is indicated in the
script. (specifically, "Kyusaku no ba") The play is by Chikamatsu Hanji,
first staged at the Takemotoza in 1780. Donald Kurihara has an interesting
and detailed analysis of the theater sequence in his book on Mizoguchi,
"Patterns of Time." Isn't there also a bunraku sequence in "The Life of
Oharu"? In the sequence where she's a concubine supposed to bear a male
heir?
