The film industry yesterday released the box office figures for 2002. The
total box office for the year was 19,678,000,000 yen (98.5% of the 2001
figures) on admissions of 160,767,000 (98.3%). Miyazaki's Sen to Chihiro
was a big reason for the good numbers in 2001, but the success of the two
Harry Potter films helped the industry keep the decline to only a small
amount. A total or 293 Japanese films were released compared to 347
foreign films, with Japanese movies taking in only 27.1% of the total box
office (compared to 39% in 2001). The top Japanese grosser was Studio
Ghibli's Neko no ongaeshi (6.46 billion yen). The number of screens rose
to 2635, or 50 more than the previous year.
