KineJun Best Ten 2002

The Kinejun's poll is not necessarily unpredictable, when we recall
Casablanca, though its's one of my top ten for good, is never expelled from
the list from the American classic fans. That's much to do with the
psychographic reality of those who vote. Yet the result sounds right in a
way. Kurosawa's legendary Shichinin no Samurai has revived in today's
political arena as a metaphor for strong support for a community in
distress. Despite the overused rhetoric, those who have painfully
experienced the economic and psychic erosion know very well that we can
hardly expect the appearance of these uniformed guardians for our rescue.
In this light, Tasogare Sebe has more elements to ring to such worn out
popular minds than the supposedly myraculous reappearance of seven stars as
the kind of last resource to hold on to, though you are never sure if such
an angelic Miyazawa Rie would be patiently waiting for you. As I wrote on
Dec 17 in "Good News for Ozu fans," many audience could be inspired to find
some solace in the Sebe's dilemma and the female appreciation of it, if
it's off the patriarchal value scales.
