As Aaron pointed out, the first part of Makino Mamoru's new reprint
series has come out. The Nihon Eigaron Gensetsu Taikei reprints classic
and/or important books from the first half of Japanese film history.
Makino would probably give me a good whap for saying this, but a few of
these books can readily be found in the furuhonya for considerably less
than the 120,000 yen price tag of each volume. However, quite a few of
the books are very difficult to find (even in libraries), and a couple
(Diet proceedings on censorship, film industry policy in occupied
Korea, etc.) are precious. Even if you have the originals books, each
one starts with often excellent kaisetsu by people like Hatano Tetsuro,
Makino Mamoru, Murayama Kyoichiro, and Aaron Gerow. This kind of
context is always great to have going into a read.

Two more sets of this series are in the works...
