The Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa (1889-1973) was the first Asian
player to become a star of the Hollywood screen, during the 1910s and
early 1920s. While best remembered for his menacing peril in The Cheat
(1915), the screenings over these three evenings, of films in which he
starred, reveal that he played a far greater range of roles. This
included portraying different races, and his box-office popularity even
allowed him to have his own production company for a brief time.

The films are free but reservations are recommended and may be made up
to one week in advance before any given show (202-707-5677) from 9-4
Monday-Friday. Most of the films to be shown are unique to the
Library's collection.
