There have been quite a few Japanese films shot in America in recent
years, such as:

Okamoto Kihachi's East Meets West
Kitano Takeshi's Brother
Harada Masato's Painted Desert
Murakami Ryu's Kyoko
Goto Daisuke's Sasori in USA
Watanabe Takeshi's Carnival of Wolves
Sleepy Heads
The Artful Dodgers

Toei had a series of films in the early 1990s called "World Cinema" with
works like No Way Back directed by Frank Capra (the 3rd, I think).

Before that, there were some films in Hawaii:

Hawaii no yoru (1953)
Akogare no Hawaii koji (1950)
Hawaii no wakataisho (1963)
Yume no Hawaii bon odori (1964)
Hawaii chindochu (1954)
Hawaiian Love (1978)
Honolulu, Tokyo, Hong Kong (1963)

Remember that many of the Toho special effects films and some of the
Nikkatsu Action films include an American scientist or an American
drifter/sailor. Check out films with Andrew Hughes, E. H. Eric, Harold
Conway, etc.

There are also quite a number of films where American stars have been
invited to appear:

Futari no hitomi (1952) with Margret O'Brien (and Misora Hibari)
Ningen no shomei (1977) with George Kennedy
Fukkatsu no hi (1980) with Olivia Hussey, Kennedy, and others
Kaiju daisenso (1965) with Nick Adams

There's even a pink film directed by Yamamoto Shinya with porno star
Harry Reems: Ikinie no onnatachi (1978).
