Dear KineJapanners,

This is not Japanese cinema at all, but I hope you'll forgive the
indiscretion given the rare nature of this event.

The Workshop on Genders and Sexualities in Asia and
the Lesbian and Gay Studies Project
at the University of Chicago
are proud to announce a queer series for Spring:

Queerly Chinese Cinemas

The Lesbian and Gay Studies Project in conjunction with the Workshop on
Genders and Sexualities in Asia is delighted to announce a visually perverse
and frankly queer 4-day program on "Queerly Chinese Cinemas," May 8-12 at
the University of Chicago. Directors Cui Zi En and Yau Ching will be
visiting the campus to introduce their film work and to discuss the role of
lesbians, gays, and queers in new kinds of cinematic radicalism in China and
Hong Kong. Yau Ching, a prison activist, queer professor at Hong Kong
Polytechnic University, and a dynamic figure in the independent film scene,
will present her newest film, Ho Yuk (Let?s Love Hong Kong), about female
desire and sexuality set in a future Hong Kong. Yau will also lead a
discussion of her experimental film work. Then, Cui Zi En, the PRC?s
leading gay activist and only ?out? academic, joins us from the Beijing Film
Academy. Known as a prominent screenwriter, actor, director, and novelist,
Cui will present and discuss his recent work including, Enter the Clowns,
The Old Testament, and Man Man Woman Woman as well as lead a discussion on
recent queer activist cinema in the People?s Republic of China. Queerly
Chinese Cinemas is supported by the Franke Institute, the Center for Gender
Studies, the Film Studies Center, the Center for East Asian Studies, the
Mass Culture Workshop, Cinema and Media Studies, and the Chicago
Experimental Film Club.
