Amazing news about Tasogare Seibei, though the nomination for Watanabe was
considered a lock.
The last Japanese film to be nominated for a Foreign Film AA was Oguri
Kohei's Doro no Kawa
(Muddy River) in 1981. The Oscar, however, went to Mephisto from Hungary.
The year before Kurosawa's
Kagemusha got the nomination, but lost to Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears.
Kurosawa won in 1975 for
Dersu Uzala, though.
