Matthew and everyone -
We just started the summer film series at the U of M Center for Japanese
Studies and the theme for this season is--you guessed it--Yamada Yoji.
Apologies for not mentioning this here sooner. Here's the web page with all
the details:
http://www.umich.edu/~iinet/cjs/events/film.html
All of the films we're showing are 35mm subtitled prints. The Twilight
Samurai print is coming from Empire pictures in NY, but the rest are
straight from Shochiku in Japan. We're showing the first Tora-san this
Friday and the first Gakko in August, so I know those two exist. I think
Shochiku has a subtitled print of A Distant Cry from Spring as well, but I'm
not sure.
As others have mentioned, a dozen or so of Yamada's movies are available on
DVD from Panorama Entertainment (Hong Kong), but I haven't been able to find
any of his films on video in the U.S.
Let me know if you need more information.
Michael Arnold
