Neoneo & the Tsuchimoto retro (J + E)

There are a couple events going on now in Tokyo which might be of
interest to some people here on KineJapan.

The first is neoneoza. This is a new theater near Ochanomizu run by a
couple fans of independent and experimental film. The programming is
being run by Fuseya Hiroo, the long-time producer for Ogawa
Productions. Their opening event was a month or so back, and I
neglected to say anything about it. But it was quite interesting. They
had Tsuchimoto Noriaki and Fujiwara Toshi as guests, and the latter
showed his documentary about Tsuchimoto's visit to the Flaherty
Seminar. They also showed Ogawa Homonki, which documented Oshima
Nagisa's visit to Ogawa Pro during the filming of Nipponkoku
Furuyashiki-mura. It was an interesting combination, and Tsuchimoto's
discussion was, as always, fun and exciting.

Neoneoza's second screening featured the work of Kanai Katsu. Missed
that one, unfortunately, but the next volume is tomorrow (sorry for the
late announcement). It's a lineup of private doc from women artists.
Many should be on hand to talk about their work.

There's plenty of opportunity to talk, too. The place is small---they
bill it not as a minitheater but a "microtheater"---and after the
screenings they lift the screen and a window for passing food and drink
out magically appears. So every screening ends up as a party. It's a
very nice touch.

I'll paste the info for getting there below. Sorry, but it's in
Japanese.

The other event is the big retrospective of Tsuchimoto Noriaki's work.
This director has been getting well-deserved attention around the
world, with visits to Taiwan and China after the Flaherty. Now Siglo is
screening everything Tsuchimoto EVER directed. This includes the
never-screened television documentary he did for Iwanami, problems with
which led to the fateful formation of Blue Group. They just started the
screenings last night with a stunning 35mm print of Document Rojo (yes,
much of that PR documentary that preceded the breakout into the
independent sector was done on 35mm...some of it in scope! This print
will be screened again on August 5th). They ended the night with a
symposium with Tsuchimoto, Kuroki and Sato Tadao.

The retrospective goes on for a month or so. Here is a link to the
homepage with schedule and kaisetsu:

(And to Tsuchimoto's homepage, if you're curious:

See you there!
