Pan shots

just a short note.... as I remember, the early [1900] Edison 1-reel/1-shot 
panoramas of the Paris Expo were entitled "Panoramas".... it was a way of 
getting the effect of a photo panorama, which were popular at the time.  I 
assumed that "pan" came out of that. I seem to remember that they were 
right to left [though the shot from the Eiffel Tower elevator was bottom to 
top... I don't remember if they called that one a pan as well].
