Shinya Tsukamoto has an interesting use for flashbacks in GEMINI/S?SEIJI,
which uses the same concept. From a shot of character A he cuts to a
flashback, indicating that the character is reminiscing. However, the shot
he cuts to after the flashback is of character B, creating a link between
the characters. Since the film (like many of Tsukamoto's movies) uses a love
triangle plot, he doesn't stop there: he cuts from that shot of character B
to another flashback, at the end of which he cuts to character C. Thus, the
pasts of the three characters are shown to be intertwined.
