on the ring remake

I thought the original Ring was good because it provided super-scariness
with a super slim pocketbook and didn't reply on expensive (or cheap and
cheesy) effects. Hopefully the US version of Ring 2 will use his true
talents.

Tomie was just a waste of film.

Howdy.

Except for the horse-on-the-ferry scene - best thing
in the whole film, and something which wasn't in the
original.

Something once noted on the forums of the Ringworld
site (http://www.theringworld.com/) is that people
seem to prefer the version they saw first.

While I still prefer the original, I think there's
something to this - try imagine watching the remake
without knowing the plot ahead of time. There would
be some good bits you wouldn't expect, and some red
herrings you wouldn't spot as red herrings right away.
Plus, the remake suffers for those who know the story
because an investigation narrative is a whole lot less
interesting if you already know what the answer's
going to be. (Then again, it doesn't help to have
Naomi Watts breathlessly repeat every line of text she
comes across.)

As near as I can tell, they've also amped up the sound
effects in the American DVD re-release of the original
- the first phone call is much louder than I remember,
for example.

I actually thought "Pirates" was a well-constructed,
well-executed and enjoyable summer film, and nothing
Verbinsky should be ashamed of. But hey, maybe that's
just me.
