Kinema Club 4??A Volume from One to Eleven?

    Kinema Club is an informal working group of people devoted to the study
of Japanese moving image media?(the URL is

    Jumping off from a symposium on director Kurosawa Kiyoshi?s films held
at NYU/the Anthology Film Archive this April, this version of the Kinema
Club conference will be held in Montreal. It will focus on the form,
function and systems of excess in genre films and other moving-image
media?including, but not limited to, horror, melodrama, pornography and
documentary. 
    Thematically, what we seek is papers that include Japanese moving image
media and historicize, read, engage or otherwise anatomize what Linda
Williams calls ?cinemas of excess,? or ?body genres?--films that go beyond
the plausible set of coordinates that classically realist films use to frame
bodies, information, genres, spectatorship and fantasy.
    The workshop will take place in an informal format, in which
participants read & comment on other participants? papers, and discussion is
open (to include participants as well as the larger & substantial film/anim?
community in Montreal, home of the Fantasia film festival).  Six or seven
papers will be selected, circulated to participants, and discussed. In
previous versions of this workshop, participants have written long papers
and presented short papers, to allow for a very generative form of
discussion & conversation, as opposed to highly targeted Q & A.
    Comparative work that engages Japanese moving image media by
non-specialists in the Japan field, or by grad students, is most welcome.
Also welcome are papers that explore similar questions how genre in moving
image media may be globalized or ?indigenized? ?papers that may broaden
existing perspectives on how we think about ?Japanese cinema,? while not
explicitly or exclusively dealing with Japan as a place of production. Film,
TV, anim?, other image-based media OK.

Kinema Club est un groupe de recherche informel se consacrant ? l??tude des

Faisant suite ? un symposium (colloque) sur les films du metteur-en-sc?ne
Kurosawa Kiyoshi qui a eu lieu en avril dernier au NYU/Anthology Film
Archive, cette ?dition de la conf?rence de Kinema Club se tiendra ?
Montr?al. Une attention tout particuli?re sera accord?e ? la forme, ? la
fonction et aux syst?mes de l?exc?s dans les films de ? genre ??y compris
les films d?horreur, les m?lodrames, la pornographie et les documentaires.

Du point de vue th?matique, nous recherchons des travaux tra?tant des images
anim?s japonaises (JMIM, Japanese moving-image media), contextualisant
historiquement, interpr?tant, questionnant ou encore diss?quant ce que Linda
Williams appelle ? les cin?mas de l?exc?s ? ou ? les genres du corps ?, des
films qui vont au-del? des syst?mes d?interpr?tation possibles qui encadrent
les corps, l?information, les genres, le ? spectatoriat ? et la fantaisie.

L?atelier aura une structure informelle, dans laquelle les intervenants
liront et commenteront les travaux des autres intervenants et ?u la
discussion sera ouverte (afin non seulement d?inclure les participants mais
aussi la communaut? plus large et nombreuse engag?e dans le domaine du film
de l?animation ? Montr?al). Nous choisirons six ou sept travaux qui seront
distribu?s aux intervenants. Dans les ?ditions anterieures de cet atelier,
les intervenants avaient r?dig? de longs papiers et pr?sent? des papiers
plus courts, afin de laisser la place ? une forme f?conde de discussion et
de dialogue pl?tot qu?? un question-r?ponse tr?s cibl?.

Des travaux comparatifs traitant du JMIM dont les auteurs ne sont pas des
sp?cialistes du Japon ou sont des ?tudiants de 2e ou 3e cycle sont aussi les
bienvenues. Le seront aussi des travaux qui traitent de la question de
comment le genre peut ?tre mondialis? et indiginis??des travaux qui peuvent
?largir des perspectives existantes ? propos de ce que nous pensons ? propos
du cin?ma japonais, m?me s?ils ne traitent pas explicitement ou
exclusivement du Japon comme lieu de production.
