Hi Deborah,
"Tomie" is a completely separate series, which involves an evil high school 
girl who keeps regenerating herself despite being repeatedly dismembered by 
the good guys. "The Grudge" is the English title for the "Juon" series, 
which has the ghosts of a mother and her little boy terrorising all who 
come in contact with the house in which they died.  
The American version of "The Grudge" with Sarah Michelle Gellar appears to 
be less a remake (as with The Ring) than an continuation of the series with 
the original director Shimizu Takashi at the helm, although no doubt it 
will retread a lot of the same material from the Japanese films.
