The first name that springs to mind is Ogawa Shinsuke, who I would almost
certainly select as the most important post-war documentary filmmaker in
Japan.  Other names that spring to mind include Hara Kazuo, Tsuchimoto
Noriaki, Kamei Fumio, Shiroyasu Suzuki, and Hirokazu Kore-eda.  I would also
add Toshio Matsumoto, who wrote the highly influential book "Eizo to
Documentary" and directed a number of "cine-poem" documentaries ("Nishijin,"
"The Song of Stones," "Mothers"), that played a crucial role in opening up
new possibilities for both documentary and experimental film in Japan in the
1960's.

I'm sure I'm forgetting countless individuals, but I think everyone here is
worthy of inclusion in the book.  Other thoughts?
