The news services reported that Kadokawa Haruki, the producer and film
director who was sentenced to prison for possession of cocaine, was
recently released. Kadokawa, who as president of Kadokawa Publications
created a storm in the 1970s and 1980s with his bold blockbuster movies
and media-mix sales campaigns, also directed a number of his films and
helped spark the careers of many stars and directors like Somai Shinji
and Sai Yoichi. Kadokawa's brother became president of the company
after Haruki's arrest and has continued the company's aggressive
pursuit of film production, recently buying Daiei. The news services
reported that Haruki is still interested in producing films and has
already begun visiting the presidents of major film companies to create
some deals.
