I just watched the awards ceremony, which is on the festival website.
Unfortunately, Yagira was not there (had to return to study for
exams?!?!? Poor kid). But it's worth noting that the jury was very
nice to the Asians this year, an editing in which the Asian presence
was stronger than ever. Park Chan-wook's Old Boy got the Grand Prix.
Maggie Cheung best actress (for a French film, although she also
appears in the new Wong Kar-wai film). And Apichatpong Weerasethakul
got a jury prize for the Thai film Tropical Malady.
Interestingly enough, despite enjoying incredible buzz for being "long
awaited" and rushed to the festival with only two hours to spare,
Wong's 2046 has suddenly disappeared from the press after being
overlooked by the jury. Sometimes it's not helpful to be the center of
attention....but that thankfully did not hurt Michael Moore this year!
