Does anyone know of any mail order Japanese rental video shops in
the states?

I get the rokuga.net service in the UK. One of the main reasons for
bringing
the court case (according to the bumpf sent out by 6ga.net) was that the
customers were able to copy music and music videos from the tv and
this was
the breach of copyright that was most offensive..
My wife Maki (Japanese expat living in UK for 8 years) can't afford the
NHK
service as it is overpriced and the choice of programming is dreadful.
She
wants to watch the Variety programmes like SMAP SMAP, Takeshi's
various
things, Fushigihakken etc, not so much the rather tame and dull
offerings
from the Japan Satellite service.
It is very surprising the TV channels don't offer something but then they
seem to have a thing about copyright in all forms.
