In Part One of the Japanese Documentary Series at the Film and Video
Center, Hara Kazuo, creator of one of the most controversial
documentary films ever made about World War II, will come to campus to
present two of his films: Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974
(Kyokushiteki erosu koiuta, 1974) and Emperor's Naked Army Marches On
(Yukiyukite shungun, 1987). By focusing on marginal characters, a
radical feminist and a stubborn anti-emperor war veteran of Japan's
campaigns in New Guinea, the two films attempt to break various social
taboos of Japanese family, society, and nationalism from an intensely
personal perspective. Professor Akira Mizuta Lippit (FMS) will
moderate the discussions.
Both shows will be presented in HIB 100 followed by Q&A sessions with
the director. Tickets are available at the door: general - $5,
faculty and staff - $4, students - $3.
