One of Japan's few filmmakers to see significant popularity both at home and
abroad, Itami Juzo was one of Japanese cinema's most unique and beloved
voices. His playful, clever satires captured the fancy of film fans all over
the globe, touching on issues that were at the same time uniquely Japanese
and universally human. Itami started his directing career late in life,
making his first film at age 50. A darling at home and on the international
film festival scene, he went on to direct 10 popular films before his
suicide at age 64.
One half of a beautiful two-part retrospective, this special Gambaru Box
contains 5 of Itami's 10 feature films: Ososhiki (The Funeral), Tampopo
(Tampopo), Ageman (Tales of a Golden Geisha), Daibyonin (The Last Dance),
and Shizukana Seikatsu (A Quiet Life). In addition to the features, set
includes "making of" documentary, Itami Juzo's Tampopo Diary, "How to be an
Ageman", and Daibyonin location special. Set also includes 40 page
(scheduled) booklet. Digitally remastered with English subtitles.
The prices are usually high, but compared to the former US Releases, the
picture quality will be perfect and even a boolet will be available.
