Thanks ever so much for the summary, I was guessing it was something rather 
like this.

I wonder to what extent the story on which this was based influenced modern 
shoujo mangas (and the anime based thereon).  I seem to see reflections of 
this in stories/shows like "Boys over Flowers" and "His and Her 
Circumstances".
