The Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) became a private
enterprise, though still subsidized by the Government, some months ago.
Since April, it has published 5 special program catalogs, the latest is
In Memory of Francois Truffaut, to accompany the near complete (20
feature films and three shorts, only Day for Night, the subject of a
current lawsuit, and The Visit (1955) are not shown) Truffaut
Retrospective on 2-22 September 2004.

Two of its publications relate to Japanese cinema: Ozu Yasujiro, 100
Anniversary (2003) and
Shimizu Hiroshi, 101st Anniversary (2004), both with Chinese and English
bilingual texts and well worth their respective price of US$13 and
US$4. You can order them online by credit card payment (postage is
extra) at: http://www.hkiff.org.hk/eng/publications/special.html

Since the Shimizu catalog has scant description on HKIFF's website, I
shall list in detail its English articles for KineJapan members'
consideration:

1. "Children of the Beehive - Vagrant Children and I" by Shimizu
Hiroshi (pp. 6-10)

2. "The Importance of Editing" by Shimizu Hiroshi (pp. 14-15)

3. "In the Land of Fallen Souls" by Wong Ain-ling (pp. 18-21)

4. "Narrative Spectacle: Rediscovering the Work of Shimizu Hiroshi" by
Yamane Sadao (pp.24-26)

5. "Women on the Run: Travel and Utopia in the Films of Shimizu
Hiroshi" by Sharon Hayashi (pp.29-31)

6. "Ozu Yasujiro and Shimizu Hiroshi's Kamata Period" by Tanaka
Masazumi (Abstract) (p. 38)

7. "I was going to steal his underwear but they were huge!" Interview
with Aoki Tomio (a.k.a. Tokkan Kozo) (pp.41-47)

8. "He clobbered me, but he was like a father." Interview with Ishii
Teruo and Onuki Masayoshi (pp. 53-59)

There are English film notes, one page for each film, on 13 Hiroshi
films, followed by a half-page profile and a one-page selected
filmography.

The Ozu catalog has 176 pages while the Shimizu catalog has only 96
pages. Both are profusely illustrated.

I wonder if any member has got the Ozu catalog and would like to comment
on its contents.
