Edo period history

I wonder if anyone can recommend a reliable factual book about the Edo period. I am particularly interested in the period around the Genroku era (c.1700) and I am concerned to find out primarily about the social aspects, customs and lifestyles of the period. Especially I need to know about life at court, but a history providing a good cross section of Edo period social milieux would be ideal. My Japanese is simply not good enough to read a history book in the language, but if any Japanese historians have been well translated into English, this would be my first port of call. Otherwise, I would content myself with an English-language writer's account. If any of these books are not generally available, suggestions for where I can get them will also be appreciated (I am currently based in London).

Thanks in advance,

ALEX
