Dear Alex,

I second Michael's recommendation. As someone interested in Edo-period
culture and literary history, though, I?m especially partial to the
following:

Gerstle, C. Andrew. Eighteenth-Century Japan: Culture and Society. Sydney:
Allen & Unwin, 1989. [Solid collection of essays on a variety of topics.]

Hall, John Whitney, ed. The Cambridge History of Japan Volume 4: Early
Modern Japan. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1991. [Great
collection of essays, including one by Shively on popular culture.]

Hibbett, Howard. The Floating World in Japanese Fiction. Rutland: Charles
E. Tuttle, 1959. [Provides a lively and rich cultural history of Genroku,
especially w.r.t. authors Ihara Saikaku and Ejima Kiseki.]

Nakane, Chie and ?ishi, Shinzabur?, eds. Tokugawa Japan: The Social and
Economic Antecedents of Modern Japan. Tokyo: University of Tokyo Press,
1991. [Good collection of essays.]

Yours,

Adam
