Edo period history

Although the books already mentioned are all fine, it
sounds to me that you're more interested in something
like a history of daily life than in the standard
general or political histories.  In that case, you
should definitely look at:

Edo Culture: Daily Life and Diversions in Urban Japan,
1600-1868
by Nishiyama Matsunosuke, translated by Gerald
Groemer.

By the way, I recently came across your article on
Mizoguchi in Sense of Cinema and thought it was
excellent.
