Dear Frako Loden,
Yomota Inuhiko made a presentation on them at the Kinejapan Conference 
in Tokyo this last June and is currently working on such a book. Beyond 
connecting them to New Year's celebrations/marketing, he observed that 
the whole institution shifts to television at a certain point where it 
continues on for quite some time. It is a fascinating topic from the 
perspective of cultural history, media, and gender studies. I'm afraid I 
can't tell you much about what may already be in print.
