If its movie theatres you are after, I wrote this feature for Midnight Eye a

The National Film Centre has a great permanent exhibition of Japanese film
history on the top floor.
As for DVD shopping, Tokyo in no way matches up to Hong Kong. Its very
expensive and most dont have subtitles. My favourite spot for picking up
DVDs is Yodobashi Camera in West Shinjuku. Probably the best in terms of
price and selection .
