Hello there,

By Sakebu Ajia, are you referring to the 1933 Tomu Uchida film? If so, it no longer exists, though there is some description of it in Peter High's book, "The Imperial Screen". If there is another, later film of that title, which does exist, my apologies.

The Japan Foundation in Tokyo hold an English-subtitled print of Tasaka's Mud and Soldiers, and are prepared to screen films on their premises for research purposes for a nominal fee. They may also hold copies of some of the other films on your list. If you send them a list of titles you might wish to see, they will be able to let you know about their holdings.

I believe that the Film Centre in Kyobashi, Tokyo, is able to arrange private screenings of their prints as long as it is an institution (not an individual) who applies for this. You might ask your supervisor in Osaka to write a letter of introduction and enquiry on your behalf - the man to approach in the first instance is Akira Tochigi.

Best regards,

Alexander Jacoby
