Last weekend the International Jury (actor Udo Kier, actress Amanda Plummer,
directors Richard Franklin, Ishii Sogo and Fabrice Du Welz) at the Brussels
International Festival of Fantasy Film (BIFFF) was very generous to
Japanese films. It awarded the Golden Raven to Shimizu Takashi's "Marebito"
and one of the two Silver Ravens to Tsukamoto Shinya's "Vital."
Shimizu shot "Marebito" (aka Stranger from Afar) on DV in 8 days (in
between Grudge activities), and the lead role is played by Tsukamoto Shinya
(so, a double prize for him).
A different jury at BIFFF awarded the "7th Orbit" prize to Ishii
Katsuhito's "The Taste of Tea," which had already won an award at the
Cinema Novo festival in Bruges, a week earlier.

Ishii Sogo's new film "Kyoshin" will have a very limited release (30 March
- 4 April) at the Laforet Museum in Harajuku ( www.kyoshin-xx.com ).
This is a longer version of Ishii's short film by the same name, which he
made last year as part of the annual omnibus project sponsored by the
Jeonju Film Festival. So, if you're in Tokyo, check it out. Who knows when
or where it will be shown next.
