I am a 67-yr-old former attorney, interested in Japanese films.
In the 1950s, my parents took me to see a Japanese film that, it turns out, I was too young to appreciate or understand. Nonetheless, its images remain vividly in my memory. Unfortunately, the film title does not.
I recall a "husband" and "wife" in what was angry dialogue (from the husband), as they stood beside an upright tub or barrel of scalding hot bath water. The wife was not allowed to bathe until husband and the remaining family members had. It also seemed to me that the husband was returning after a long absence, perhaps serving in WWII, to his family and they were living on a small island off Japan.
Does anyone recognize what I'm talking about? Can anyone give me the title or suggest who directed it so I could look through his work? I'd be grateful.
Thank you.
YT, Diane Porter
