It's just occurred to me that Daisuke Ito's films, pre- and postwar, are full of crowd scenes. A crowd carrying lanterns in pursuit of a fugitive was a motif he employed regularly so it's a group vs individual thing. You can see it in Jirokichi the Rat (1931) and in Benten Kozo (1958) which I believe is a remake of an extant 1935 film, The Comb of Oroku, which I've not seen. Ito's work in general might be a good source of crowd scenes.
