Open-Rank Position in Japanese culture and language

Brown University. The Department of East Asian Studies invites applications for an open rank position to be filled either at the assistant, associate, or professor level in Japanese culture and language. The position will begin on July 1, 2006. The area of specialization is open to all fields of Japanese studies, literature, film and media, cultural anthropology, or other related fields. Applicants are expected to take an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of Japanese culture and language and to offer courses in the field of specialization and upper-level language courses. We seek applicants who can contribute to the broader intellectual life of the university, and can perform appropriate university, professional, and community services.

Required Qualifications: Completed PhD by time of appointment; Scholarly publications in the area of specialization; Native or near native fluency in Japanese and English; Broad knowledge of Japanese culture and tradition; Strong teaching record.

Application Deadline: October 20, 2005, until the position is successfully filled.
Interested candidates should send a letter of application, CV, and no more than three representative scholarly publications (only abstracts in case of books) and conference papers to the search committee. In addition, those applying at the rank of assistant professor should submit three letters of reference; senior applicants should submit three letters of reference and the names of five additional scholars whom the committee may contact.
