Viennale Film Festival 2005; Vienna Oct.14-26

In two weeks the 43. Vienna International Film Festival VIENNALE starts and as in the previous years films from Asia feature very prominently in the program. Although this year there is no explicit Japanese special, the program includes several Japanese films as well. One of this year's highlights is the first screening outside of Japan of Yamatoya Atsushi's marvelous classic from 1967, KOYA NO DATCHIWAIFU (Sex Doll of Wastelands).

The following Japanese films will be screened:

Also, a special program is dedicated to the great Chinese actress Ruan Ling Yu:

The other special programs this years include tributes to Jane Birkin, Pedro Costa and the city of Buenos Aires as well as an Andy Warhol retrospective. Warhol's 485 minutes long Empire looks like a short film beside Lav Diaz' 645 minutes long epic The Evolution of a Filipino Family. The Viennale is a leisurely festival where one has time to watch lengthy films like that!
