This blog post doesn't say what happened (the exact details of which
seem rather unclear), but does go into a bit of detail about Hosoda's
work on Howl and how the film "One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret
Island" can be read as a metaphor for Hosoda's experiences with Studio
Ghibli and trying to get Howl made:
