YIDFF to go independent

Those familiar with the Yamagata International Documentary Film
Festival, Asia's largest documentary film festival and one of the most
celebrated festivals in Japan, know that the festival up until now has
operated as a branch of Yamagata City. Well, the Yamagata Shinbun
reports that, pending final approval of the executive committee, the
YIDFF will become a "voluntary organization" (nin'i dantai) in April
and thus become more independent of the City. The City will still be
involved in the YIDFF for the time being. Here is the article in
Japanese:

This will probably pose new opportunities for the YIDFF, allowing it
greater freedom in planning and accounting, but also new challenges in
financing.
