While we're on the subject of Best Ten lists, Pia magazine has come out with
their overall film popularity rankings for 2005, based on audience exit
surveys. Their samplings are not all that large -- ranging from 155 for Star
Wars Episode 3 (the highest ranking nationally released film, with 95.2 out
of 100 points) to 30 for Scrap Heaven on the 2005 list -- but do offer a
rough indication of what audiences actually like (as opposed to what they
have been conned into buying tickets for).

On the Tokyo mini theater chart the top film for 2005, with 91.1 points
is -- Summer Time Machine Blues, Motohiro Katsuyuki 's time-traveling
comedy.

Here are the others:

2: Maison de Himiko
3. Chorus
4. Beyond the Sea
5. Hanging Garden (Kuchu Teien)
6. Linda, Linda, Linda
8. Scrap Heaven
9. Bungee Jumping of Their Own
10. A Song of Joy

On the national release chart, following Star Wars, are:

2. Always -- Sunset on Third Street (Always -- Sanchome no Yuhi)
3. A Moment to Remember
4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
5. Yamato: The Last Battle (Otokotachi no Yamato)
6. Cinderella Man
7. Shall We Dance?
8. Fly, Daddy, Fly
9. Aegis (Bokoku no Aegis)
10. A Stormy Night (Arashi no Yoru ni)

What this indicates is that the much-slated Motohiro can connect with
audiences here minus the backing of Fuji TV and the Odoru Daisosen (Bayside
Shakedown) franchise. It also suggests that Japan is still a welcome home
for Hollywood's various box office misfires (Cinderella Man) and critical
disasters (Beyond the Sea).
