Eiren released its figures for the 2005 box office and unfortunately
they showed declines. Total box office was down about 6% to 198 billion
yen as was total attendance, at 160 million. In good news, however, the
share for Japanese films was at 41.3%, topping 40% for the first time
since Princess Mononoke in 1997. The fact that only one foreign film
topped 10 billion yen was the primary factor in this, but there were a
number of Japanese hits, including Howl's Moving Castle (which just
received an Academy Award nomination) and the Odoru daisosasen
spinoffs.. Number of screens increased to 2926, with multiplexes now
accounting for 67% of all screens.
