Suki Da
Commercial director Hiroshi Ishikawa made a splash in 2002 with his debut
feature film Tokyo.sora, which screened at the influential Locarno Film
Fest. Suki Da (I Love You) is his sophomore effort and it's a well-observed,
quiet and introspective piece. Yosuke and Yu are high school chums and the
cute Yu (Aoi Miyazaki) has a crush on the guitar-playing, self-contained
Yosuke. They hang out by a concrete riverbank and one day Yu kisses him, but
gets no response. Heartbroken she flees. The story then jumps 17 years into
the future; Yosuke (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is a music producer and struggling
to get by. By coincidence he auditions Yu for a recording and they are
reunited, with unfinished business. A fine attention to detail and delicate
depiction of emotional states inform this unadorned and contemplative piece..
The pace may be a bit too deliberate for some but the director's ability to
make us see from his characters eyes creates an affecting tale.
