Imamura Shohei

Really sad news. Ballad of Narayama was my first introduction to Japanese
cinema, on a typically eclectic double bill with Wakamtasu's Violated Angels
at the long-mourned Scala Cinema in London (before Stanley Kubrik did his
bit to destroy UK film culture). Personally I have always been very fond of
Imamura's work, especially VENGEANCE IS MINE. I hope UK/US DVD distributors
catch up with his backlog sometime soon - PROFOUND DESIRE OF THE GODS for
example is well worth a revival/introduction to Western audiences.
