I've seen books designed to teach English through movies from as  
early as the Taisho era. It's a sub-culture of Japanese cinema that  
runs to the present-day. Not surprisingly, it took a multi-media  
twist in the 1990s with DVD/book packages of your favorite Hollywood  
films. Judging from this, it's hard to say if it works.
