Tim,

I don't know of any full-length biographical or interview film or TV program
exclusively about Hiroshi Teshigahara, although something like that may very
well exist.

For two different documentary films that I made in the early 1990s, I
interviewed Teshigahara at length on several occasions, and you can see
snatches from those interviews, but Teshigahara appears only for 3 or 4
minutes in films that are not exclusively about him. The two films are:

a) "Music for the Movies: TORU TAKEMITSU" (directed by Charlotte Zwerin) --
a film about Takemitsu's work as a film-music composer. As you know
Takemitsu did the scores for all of Teshigahara's films, and had a deep
longstanding working relationship with Takemitsu. This film includes
extended excerpts from "Otoshiana" (Pitfall) and "Suna no Onna" (Woman in
the Dunes), and Teshigahara speaks at some length about his work with
Takemitsu.
The film is distributed by Sony Classics on VHS, and may still be available
through Amazon, etc. For more information, see:

b) "DREAM WINDOW: Reflections on the Japanese Garden" (directed by John
Junkerman) -- This is a film about the aesthetics of Japanese landscape
design and classical and modern gardens. Teshigahara appears working on a
modern garden in a Kyoto restaurant, and I also interviewed him about garden
design. There is a sequence on the garden that Teshigahara designed for the
Domon Ken Memorial Museum of Photography in Sakata, Japan; and also an
extended sequence on the interior "garden" that Isamu Noguchi designed for
the Sogetsu Building in Tokyo (headquarters of Teshigahara's flower school
and museum). "Dream Window" was produced for the Smithsonian Institution
and is available on VHS and DVD through the online shop of the Freer
Gallery of art (Washington DC); see

Subject: Video of (not by) Teshigahara Hiroshi?

Would anyone happen to know of any video-taped interviews or
conversations including the director Teshigahara Hiroshi (_Suna no
onna_, _Tanin no kao_), preferably about his work in film rather than
_ikebana_? I'd be very grateful for any info on where such video might
exist, and whom I should bribe (blackmail?) to see it! ^_^ Also, if
anyone knows of similar video involving the novelist Abe Kobo, my
gratitude would know no bounds!

Best,
