I forgot to mention that evening screenings during the FIAF congress
have been given over to the various archives in Japan to show off some
of their recently found or restored films. Highlights included a
restored print of Bakudatto-hime, the first animated feature film made
after the war (presented by the Fukuoka City Public Library Film
Archive); a significant portion of Nakayama Shichiri, a 1930 Mina
Talkie film shot at 21fps; abstract experimental animation by Ogino
Shigeji (including an experimental color one--all from 1935); Kawaii
sakanaya-san, the first film made in the Konicolor system; and Ginrin,
a long-lost experimental PR film on bicycles made by Matsumoto Toshio,
Yabe Masao and Higuchi Genichiro, with music by Takemitsu Toru (his
first score for film, by the way) (all these presented by the Film
Center). Ritsumeikan is presenting Onsen Hiwa: Misasa Kouta (a Makino
Pro kouta eiga) and the Film Preservation Society their Modan Kaidan
Ichioku-en (a Saito Torajiro comedy short).
