The second program in a series of screenings featuring work by thirty-
one media artists active in Japan between 1968 and 1988, this
selection explores two areas of early video art in Japan: political
activism and video poetics. The 1970s saw the rise of political
protest, feminist video, and subversive works designed for broadcast.
Subsequently, a younger generation of artists in the 1980s used
sophisticated editing techniques to create works that were highly
poetic, cerebral, and often humorous. What unites both generations of
artists is the use of video as a platform for self-expression,
reflecting the rapid transformation of Japanese society during this
period.
