Dear KineJapan members,

The 6th New York Asian Film Festival, curated and organized by the
volunteers at Subway Cinema (including myself) begins in less than
two weeks and our final lineup of films and the screening schedule
have just been announced.

Our Japanese selections this year skew very genre-themed, and include
the massive, manga-inspired box offices hits DEATH NOTE and DEATH
NOTE: THE LAST NAME; the dark, manga-based revenge/action thriller
FREESIA: BULLET OVER TEARS; two films from Takashi Miike: his gay-
themed arthouse prison flick BIG BANG LOVE: JUVENILE A, and his
nostalgic superhero mainstream effort ZEBRAMAN; Sion Sono's
simultaneous entry in and spoof of the J-horror genre, EXTE; the
Japanese Academy Award-winning HULA GIRLS; Shinya Tsukamoto's dark
and moody bid for mainstream acceptance, NIGHTMARE DETECTIVE; Kiyoshi
Kurosawa's entry in the "J-Horror Theater" franchise, RETRIBUTION;
Kenta Fukasaku's revival of the SUKEBAN DEKA series, YO-YO GIRL COP;
a free screening of the kid-friendly kaiju film GAMERA THE BRAVE; and
one of my favorite movies of the last year, the lush musical tragedy
MEMORIES OF MATSUKO.

We have changed venues this year to the very modern (and comfortable)
IFC Center in Greenwich Village, and we are proud to be holding our
final weekend of screenings at New York's Japan Society, on East 47th
Street.

The Japan Society weekend will feature two special guests, DEATH NOTE
director Kaneko Shusuke and EXTE director Sono Sion.

Please visit our website at http://www.subwaycinema.com/ for more
information about the films, guests, and other activites. Feel free
to email me privately if you'd like any additional information.

Thank you,

Marc Walkow
